Male Menapause

The Male Menapause

Generally, menopause is a condition associated with women. But, it is a reality that men can witness a situation of menopause because of a change in hormonal level. Although the debate is still heating up as if male menopause is a reality or myth but there are some evidences to support the thought of male menopause. Though one can not say if male menopause is as systematic as female, but, researches will surely help to draw some conclusions in this regard.

Since researches are still going on to find some solid evidences, so, most physicians have replaced the name of male menopause with hormonal deficiency or andropause. It means that men can face certain problems similar to female menopause because of a decrease in androgen or testosterone.

Some of the most common symptoms of male menopause or androgen deficiency are;

  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweating
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Forgetfulness
  • Weight gain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Irritability
  • And so on
  • It is worth mentioning that almost all of these symptoms are faced by women, but, the only difference is that the severity and intensity of these symptoms is much less in males. These symptoms are less severe due to the reduction of androgen which never gets stopped.

Testosterone level can come down because of different diseases. Diabetes, in particular, is one of the most common underlying causes of testosterone deficiency.

    Can it be treated?
Since testes don’t stop producing testosterone, so, the condition of menopause never gets accomplished. It is because of this particular reason that andropause can be treated with certain methods. A physician asks about the symptoms and proceeds with certain blood tests to check the blood testosterone level. All these tests and symptoms help to determine the best treatment method for andropause.

In most cases, testosterone replacement therapy is used to treat different symptoms especially the symptoms of depression, fatigue and reduced libido can be made less intense. It however is difficult to treat the problems like erectile dysfunction with testosterone replacement therapy.

    The bottom line:
The fact of the matter is that male menopause is not something like female menopause. It is difference from female menopause because female menopause is a situation where body stops producing hormones, whereas, male menopause is a situation characterized by a reduction of male hormones but body never stops producing these hormones.

It implies the fact that women can become infertile but men can’t. That's why the whole process should be referred as andropause instead of male menopause.
